My new Online Shop is LIVE!

My internet silence has been for two reasons:

  1. My daytime job in advertising got very busy…very.
  2. I’ve been working on my online shop, which is now ready for its fledgling flight!

Right now it is just prints and original paintings, but once I smooth out any kinks as orders come in, I will eventually open it up to very limited BESPOKE MUERTITA orders!! Yes Ladies, Gentleman, and Genderfluid, you will be able to custom order a Muertita. To be in the first to know when that becomes available, take a moment and sign up for my Newsletter.

So if you are excited to get to that point, please share my shop. Let’s get the word out and start this adventure. If you see anything that you would like fixed in the store, please let me know. Check out the free section for downloads!

Huge plus, this shop ports over to Facebook nicely. If you are into Facebook shares, go to my Facebook Shop Page, find a piece you like, and share from there!

Just an update about my iPad

Hey guess what will be coming back soon: DAILY SKETCHES!! There may be a new iPad, as well as as new stylus and new dodo case in my future. I’ll be upgrading my stylus to a Jot Touch – I hear great things about it with the iPad Air 2  and my favorite drawing app for iPad, Procreate.

Hear that, THIEF! I’VE MOVED ON! I WILL KEEP SKETCHING DIGITALLY, despite your wicked ways! <weeps silently>

I will post when my new buddy (case, iPad, stylus)  is all good and ready, hopefully with a review of my own. There weren’t many reviews for the Jot Touch, at least when it came to what I was interested in knowing.

Aurélien Chevaleyrias – Adonit Jot Touch with Pixelpoint quick review – This review was very informative about the history of how far adonit has come, the actual size of the tip, charging, and much more.

Ben Frank Art – Jot Touch Pixelpoint Review+Procreate : This review was great for showing me what I wanted to see – different brushstrokes, how bad the lag was, the visual distance between the “surface” I was drawing on and the tip of the pen.

Until later!

Tide And Blossom Show Recap – Beer and Buddies!

FINALLY! A Post! Sorry it’s so late. I have been spending my evenings sleeping since the show. Wow. I should do this sleeping thing more often. I feel amazing.

The Short Version

THANK YOU for all those that came out to the opening night of Tide & Blossom at 8 Ball Art Gallery! You guys made it FAAAAAAAAb-u-lus!. The vibe was wonderful, welcoming, mellow. People hung out and chatted, there were drinks, couches, snacks, and hugs. It was tremendously rewarding to have you show up. And for all those who could not make it, but sent messages and good luck wishes, you warmed my heart! Here’s to you guys!

Also, the show will be up until December 5th, so if you want to swing by the 8 Ball Art Gallery , feel free to check it out. There are affordable art prints available! Get some early holiday shopping done.

The Whole Sheboodle – and PHOTOS!

For this show I became a shut-in for most of the year. I still work full-time as a designer at an advertising agency. During the more intense weeks the schedule went something like this:

• Work at design job all day.
• Take the train home from work.
• Eat dinner.
• Shower.
• Change into painting/sculpting clothes.
• Drink tea or coffee, definitely caffeinated while pondering workflow.
• Decide mood based on workflow then turn on music.
• Work into the wee hours of the morning.
• Around 2 or 3 put on pajamas.
• Sleep 4-5 hours.
• Take train to work.
• Start the whole cycle over again.

Weekends were the best because my goodness, I could work all day!

I was not nearly as stressed as last year. Last year I would have nightmares that no one would show and that my pieces would fall off the wall and shatter. I’d wake up in a sweat. This year, I knew at least 10 people would show in person for sure, and I had enough experience to have confidence in my process. So, I had that going for me.

I was excited. I knew all this work was going to be up, seen, and shared (by at least 10 people).

Then…YOU MADE IT AWESOME! SO MANY MORE THAN 10 PEOPLE!!! You sent messages! You shared on facebook! You re-tweeted and got the word out! Those that were able to come, we partied! This is how we party!

To make the event extra special, we had some great brews from Paperback Brewing Company. (Thank you guys so much!) They  were so generous with their brews at the opening. They really set the mood and had people chatting over them tasty hops. The handcrafted beers at this event were The Refined Bachelor IPA, In The Red Red Ale, and The Sleeping Monarch Milk Stout. Soooo delish. Follow them on Facebook, maybe they’ll post when you can get a taste!

And now for the photos you guys sent me. Thank you for messaging, tagging (woot #TideAndBlossom!!) and sharing. I made sure to not have my phone on me because I wanted to talk with you all and not miss a thing – so I couldn’t take any photos!

Some More People Just Need To Know They Rock

Special thanks to my Husband. Without you, at my best I would be the frantic, scrappy artist, dumpster diving for wood and scampering around in badly ventilated sheds. With you I have a professional face to show the world, a Studio and an Art Lab (photos coming soon!) to work in, and the courage to take on Behemoths like art shows. Also, thank you for your patience while I spent all my time, and lots of your time, getting ready for this show.

Special thanks to the amazing photographer Chris Rigg. There is only so far a little photo of mine will go. Because of you, the Muertitas have gotten so much internet love, have award winning prints, and have been invited to magazine publications! (More on that last one later.)

And special thanks to B.J. – you helped set-up, drive Muertitas around at 3 AM, to and fro, stop and go, helped paint the Art-Lab, bought food, and are always offering a car ride or a tequila shot.

The experience of a lifetime, twice over now. Thank you for reading this far, for following this long, and for caring this much. Let’s see what the future holds!

My pieces have the honor of being be in the Cathedral Mausoleum Art Exhibit curated by international artist Luis Villanueva, but there is so much more. Artists from all over the country set up incredible altars along the winding paths. During the day you are able to see all the details, and in the evening the cemetery really comes to life when the altars light up.

This is a big event, so plan ahead about parking. Pre-Purchase your tickets on their website to avoid lines the day of the event. Calaca apparel encouraged! Families are welcome!

Germanish Adventures and Thieves

Just this last week, we had the good fortune of going to Germany and Switzerland for a friend’s wedding! I had planned to sit and sketch forests, cathedrals, and train-stops as we traversed the roads by backpack and train. So our adventure began…

giphy-1

We were 2 days in, buying food for the day at a grocery store in Zurich. My iPad wore it’s DodoCase that made it look like a notebook. She was low key, smooth, and clutched to my chest. At the bagging area, I placed her down beside me to free up my hands. She was right under my elbow, above waist height. She was there for a moment, long enough to put sandwiches, apples, and water in a bag. Only a moment.

Then, the iPad was gone.

giphy-3

As in poof. It had to be a mistake. I must have left is somewhere. Did I not just have it?

giphy-2

We searched for hours, went to the police station, went to lost and found, backtracked all our steps. Then it sank in. A gift that had become part of my every day life, my productivity in work, art, life, the device which held my sketches for my art shows, notes, stories… Stolen.

giphy

There are many like it, but that one was mine.

giphy-4

They are precious, expensive, and in some cases life-changing. Mine is password protected, Find my iPhone is active, I’ve changed all my passwords, done all the steps for this situation – but I have accepted that it is gone. I’ve had some experience with art being stolen from me, but I’m still no better at dealing with the feelings. I’ve had 3 precious painting stolen from me on separate occasions, pages from sketchbooks ripped out, etc. Each time there was a mix of confusion, betrayal, anger, then acceptance. This one was just as hard as the first time, if not harder. The real kicker is, the last backup is from 8 weeks ago. Yeah. I had so much on it, that I needed to upgrade my account for more space, which I planned to spend on after our trip.

giphy-5

However, we were 2 days into our adventure, and had so much to see and experience. So we marched on.

Our days were filled with awe and beauty. My nights filled with nightmares of thieves and stolen things. Everyday, it was a choice to remember that no matter how expensive and precious a thing, it is still just a thing. My loved ones were well. We were traveling, a luxury in itself! We were overseas, looking at really cool old shit, marveling at the world. Yes, those are swans.

I photographed some delights that exposed me as an immature American. Seriously, who puts “fashion outlet” on a  cow as advertisement, or a creepy clown poster to welcome us into our hotel room?

image

The amount of detail and time given to old architecture is inspiring. For example, these little men and their animal or tool were carved into the corners of building windows, just because. I think it had been turned into an office building.

image

The trip was beautiful, a delight, and filled me with inspiration for more art.  We went to Zurich, admired the Black Forest, partied in Sankt Blasien, drove with friends to Munich, rode bikes along the Isar River, and found an art store called Zumstein with an AMAZING selection of art supplies!

We are back, going through photos and memories, and discussing getting another iPad. I’m focusing on my group show November 1st, and my Solo Show November 8th. Ain’t nobody gonna hold us down.

I hope to see you at my show! Let’s rock the rest of this year.beyonce pump awesome

Daily Sketches 25 – MerBear and Fancy Ponytail

Sorry there were no posts last week. My dayjob in advertising can get demanding, and I had very little time for anything but designing, designing, designing.
I’ll be traveling to a friend’s wedding in a few days, OVERSEAS! I’ll will do my best to keep these sketches daily, but I might have to post them all when I get back – depends on the kind of internet I’ll be able to snag over there.
So, until then, this little guy finds living under the sea unBEARabel without his besties.

And a friend of mine with mystically gorgeous hair allowed me to photograph her majestic ponytail for reference for my DailyObservation.
